Deep in the Hallertau region of Germany, Florian Seitz cultivates hops on a farm that has been in the family for four generations. Some technology has improved over that time but the idea is the same, grow the finest noble flower for local styles of beer. Increasingly more modern, fruit forward showcases are also being grown.
OLD WORLD FLAVOR
We got the impression that Florian considers Hallertauer Mittelfrüher the finest German hop (we agree). Regrettably, Mittelfrüher is a pain to grow due to its disease susceptibility and low alpha acid. It’s increasingly being replaced by Hallertau Tradition, a close but not exact replacement. Despite increasingly challenging growing conditions, Florian only has no plans to slow down or stop growing the prized Mittelfrüher. We fully support that decision!
NEW WORLD CULTIVARS
We had a chance to rub this years Hallertau Blanc and Mandarina Bavaria. These are two cultivars bred for a more modern, fruit forward aroma and flavor. Despite lower yield and alpha acid this year following an unusually dry & hot summer, the aroma is all still there. Blanc exhibited notes of white grape not too different from Nelson but much more restrained. Mandarina was an incredible red currant note. We are excited to start using both.
